When Seeking Help Causes More Harm - Secondary Wounding
Part 5 - When Faith is Used to Stay - And Truth is Trying to Lead You Out
After I left, I sought professional help.
I wasn’t trying to analyse myself. I was trying to document harm and regain stability.
Very quickly, I was asked:
“Let’s look at why you would put yourself in a situation like this.”
That question may sound reasonable — but timing matters.
For someone with a long history of:
- being blamed
- being scapegoated
- being gaslit
- being told problems are “their part”
This landed as:
“This happened because of you.”
What I needed first was:
- belief
- validation
- clear naming of wrongdoing
- safety before insight
Instead, analysis came before care.
This is called secondary wounding — when the response to trauma repeats the original injury by shifting focus away from the harm and back onto the person harmed.
Insight without safety is not healing. It is another form of erasure.
