Root of Bitterness? Part 4
Discernment, Perspective, and the Need for the Whole Body
A Short Scripture Study Using the BELOVED Lens
Scripture teaches that discernment grows through testing, weighing, and humble dependence upon God. Because every believer sees through the lens of limited experience, no individual possesses complete perspective. For this reason, God designed the Church as a body with many members, gifts, and viewpoints.
The biblical answer is not distrust of leadership, nor blind trust in leadership. The answer is mature discernment. Leaders are to be respected, but all teaching is to be tested. Perspectives are to be weighed. Wisdom is found in humility. Christ alone is the Head of the Church and the only One who sees perfectly.
As believers learn to listen, weigh, test, and remain teachable, the whole Body grows together into the fullness of Christ.
✟
Hebrews 5:14
"But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice."
Background
The previous studies explored:
-
hidden roots and community health (Hebrews 12)
-
the responsibility of shepherds
-
the accountability of shepherds themselves
An important question follows:
How do believers discern truth in complex situations?
Scripture teaches that human beings do not see everything equally or completely.
Each person brings:
-
strengths
-
weaknesses
-
blind spots
-
experiences
-
perspectives
This is one reason God designed the Church as a body rather than a single voice.
🄴ntire Flow
A consistent biblical pattern emerges:
God gives gifts to many people
↓
Each person sees part of the picture
↓
Truth is weighed and tested
↓
Discernment increases
↓
The Body is strengthened
When this process breaks down:
One perspective becomes dominant
↓
Questions stop being asked
↓
Alternative perspectives are dismissed
↓
Blind spots increase
↓
Discernment decreases
↓
The community becomes vulnerable
Scripture consistently favours discernment through mutual dependence rather than unquestioning dependence upon a single human voice.
𝓁anguage
"Discern"
Hebrews 5:14
"But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice."
Greek:
diakrisis (διάκρισις)
Meaning:
-
discernment
-
distinguishing
-
careful evaluation
-
separating one thing from another
Biblical discernment involves weighing, testing, and evaluating.
"Test"
1 Thessalonians 5:21
"Test everything; hold fast what is good."
Greek:
dokimazō (δοκιμάζω)
Meaning:
-
examine
-
test
-
prove
-
evaluate
Paul does not say:
Accept everything.
Nor does he say:
Reject everything.
He says:
Test everything.
"Many Counselors"
Proverbs 11:14
"In an abundance of counselors there is safety."
The biblical assumption is not that one person always sees correctly.
Wisdom grows when perspectives are weighed carefully.
𝓸rigin (God revealed)
What does this reveal about God?
God is humble enough to involve people in His work.
Throughout Scripture He speaks through:
-
prophets
-
kings
-
shepherds
-
apostles
-
ordinary believers
-
men
-
women
-
young
-
old
God's design is not built around human infallibility.
It is built around dependence upon Him.
Because God alone sees perfectly, all human perspectives must remain submitted to Him.
ⓥiew through Christ
Jesus is the only person who saw perfectly.
Yet even Jesus frequently asked questions.
Examples:
"Who do people say that I am?"
"What do you want me to do for you?"
"Who touched me?"
Jesus was not gathering information because He lacked knowledge.
He was creating space for people to participate in truth.
Christ consistently demonstrated humility, curiosity, listening, and engagement.
𝔼valuate
What happens when a single human voice becomes unquestionable?
Scripture repeatedly warns against placing ultimate confidence in human leaders.
1 Corinthians 3:4–7
"I follow Paul."
"I follow Apollos."
Paul rebukes the mindset.
The focus had shifted from Christ to personalities.
Acts 17:11
"Now these Jews were more noble... examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."
Even Paul's teaching was examined.
The Bereans were commended, not rebuked.
Truth welcomes examination.
The Value of Different Perspectives
Different experiences often cause believers to notice different things.
A person who has experienced:
-
suffering
-
reconciliation
-
failure
-
restoration
-
injustice
-
healing
may notice aspects of a situation that others miss.
Likewise, others may notice things they miss.
This does not mean every perspective is correct.
It means every perspective should be weighed.
Where Modern Churches Can Struggle
A subtle danger can emerge when believers are trained to believe:
One leader always knows.
One teacher is always correct.
One voice should settle every question.
The New Testament does not present the Church this way.
Instead, Scripture describes:
-
mutual submission
-
testing
-
discernment
-
accountability
-
plurality of leadership
-
participation of the whole body
The issue is not rejecting leadership.
The issue is remembering that only Christ is infallible.
🅓irection
What fruit should be present in a healthy community?
According to Scripture:
-
humility
-
curiosity
-
teachability
-
discernment
-
accountability
-
careful listening
-
willingness to test what is heard
Questions for communities:
-
Are multiple perspectives welcomed?
-
Is Scripture the final authority?
-
Are leaders accountable?
-
Can questions be asked safely?
-
Is discernment encouraged?
-
Are believers being taught how to think biblically or simply what to think?
Questions for individuals:
-
Am I testable?
-
Am I teachable?
-
Do I weigh what I hear?
-
Do I assume understanding too quickly?
-
Am I willing to learn from others?
